Whew, finally finished this thing!

This is my contribution to this fun project: :iconartograph-card: Artograph-Card

The Artograph Cards project showcases a wide variety of different artists working in different mediums, each using themselves as the subject matter of the art.

Very nice. It tells a story and is very good technically: stylized and realistic without being too much of either.

It's all a lie. >.> I just didn't draw the piles of disorganized paper I have sitting on it. (I actually hate having a messy desk, but get behind on tidying it up when I'm really busy)
And thank you. :)

It was originally going to be Artistic-Autograph Card, but it just got shortened to Artograph since the drawing is an artists signature style, if any of that makes sense outside of my head.

Thank you! And don't worry, it's just a matter of practice. I struggled with drawing humans for a really long time, and only very recently started to feel more confident with them. I still feel I have a ways to go before I'm as comfortable drawing them as I am animals.

Keep at it and you'll get to where you want to be! :)

No problem at all!

One piece of advice I've heard a lot that I find super helpful is: your sketchbook is for you, no one else. I think a lot of the time, as artists, we're afraid to make any bad drawings (I know I am) and this causes us to freeze up when practicing stuff we don't feel confident with yet. I would often start drawing a person in my sketchbook, but fret that it didn't look good, and just stop. If you approach your sketchbook with the notion that no one is ever going to see it but you, and that it's just for practice/experimentation, it helps free you up a lot. Because no matter what, when you start out drawing something you don't have a lot of practice with, you're probably not going to be happy with it at first. The trick is just to keep at it and eventually you'll start learning how to get it right.

A good way to practice is to sketch people from life. In coffee shops, in waiting rooms at appointments, etc. This is pretty challenging because they tend to not stay still but it's a good way to get quick gestures down on paper to slowly get a feel for human proportions. Also drawing from photos/magazines is really helpful too. Once you understand the basic realistic anatomy of human bodies and faces, it gets easier to cartoon them.

And for reference, here's my own progression so you can see we all start somewhere. The first image is from 2002 (when I was 16) so it took me a looong time to get to where I am now, mainly because I avoided practicing people much until fairly recently. The friends I know who are the best at drawing them just draw them a lot. The more you practice, the faster the improvement happens. :)

i am like that all the time im always terrified of making bad drawings or i always critique my self to the extreme (if that makes sense ) i think they way you put it is perfect and a great way to think about it. From now on i keep practicing >^-^<
